Future Challenges for Feed Additives - Production Efficiency, Environmental Issues and Improving Human Food Quality and Safety

Feed additives play an ever more important role, particularly in terms their influence on animal health and growth, animal feed and human food quality and safety, and the environment.

It is now widely accepted that animal feeds must be of high quality and free from spoilage or contamination in order to ensure the safety of food products of animal origin. However, an even greater challenge now is to design animal feed ingredients such that they will have a positive benefit in modulating food quality to support consumer health. A major factor driving the development of functional foods is undoubtedly changing consumer attitudes and expectations about nutrition.

The feed modulation of food quality is very much in agreement with the general EU philosophy of a nutrition-based health approach. It is clearly recognised at EU level that feed additives in particular, and animal nutrition in general can have favourable effects upon human food products of animal origin.

This innovative and highly original report covers all these aspects and interactions in detail, as well as the relevant EU legislation, and the product benefits and research challenges for the future.
