Product Overview

The European dairy sector has operated under extreme and challenging conditions in 2015, culminating in a significant fall in prices along the EU dairy supply chain, with some prices having reportedly fallen to below the cost of production. Acknowledging the severity of these market conditions, the European Commission announced a €500 million aid package to support farmers. Previous initiatives to improve the functioning of supply chains have included the development of the European Commission’s Food Price Monitoring Tool, which brings together price indices to track price developments at different stages of supply chains.

While indices are useful for comparing relative price trends along a supply chain, they provide little transparency on the magnitude of price margins along the supply chain nor on how such margins are evolving.

This new comprehensive report brings together farm cost and supply chain pricing data from 27 EU Member States to provide an objective and independent analysis of how monthly farm-gate, wholesale and retail prices and margins have been evolving along the liquid milk, cheese and butter supply chains in each Member State between 2005 and 2015. It provides analytical evidence to verify claims that margins at certain levels of the supply chain are being squeezed, thereby providing much sought after transparency on prices and margins in the dairy supply chain. It is an essential information source for all stakeholders involved in the ‘fair’ negotiation of contracts as well as those seeking to improve the functioning of EU agri-food chains.
